Linh Ung Pagoda Overview
Local residents on Son Tra peninsula recalled stories relating to the existence of Linh Ung Pagoda. Accordingly, under the reign of King Minh Mang in the Nguyen Dynasty (the 19th century), a Buddhist statue drifted downstream to the area and got anchored at a sandy embankment. The local villagers thought it was a good sign, so they built up a small pagoda to worship the statue. From that day on, they said, the whole coastal region enjoyed good weather.
Linh Ung Pagoda can easily be recognized from afar due to its location set on the highest point on Son Tra peninsula. From any corner of Da Nang, visitors can easily capture the sight of the Guanyin statue placed by the pagoda. She looks to the sea, with her back leaning against the mountain side. One of her hands is set in a mudra gesture and the other hand holds a small water jar (Buddhist sa.amrta).
Legend atttached deeply to Buddha
Legend tells that at the time of Minh Mang King (Nguyen Dynasty, XIX century), there was a Buddha statue from nowhere to drift on the sandbank here. Believing that there is an auspicious sign coming right here, the locals founded a shrine for worship, from that, the region was stable and fishermen could work in peace during a long time. Since then, the sandbank has been named Bai But (means Buddha Land on earth) and it’s also where Linh Ung Pagoda (temple) located today.
Construction and inaugurate
People started to construct the temple on June 19th, 2004 lunar, and officially inaugurated on July 30th, 2010. Linh Ung Bai But pagoda is considered as a work stamped development footprint og Buddhism in Vietnam in the XXI century and a meeting place of heaven and sacred air of earth and people’s heart.

Just 9km away from the center of Danang city, Linh Ung Bai But is considered as the biggest pagoda in Vietnam in both scale and art architecture. The pagoda brings a contemporary style combined with inherent tradition of pagodas in Vietnam, with curved roof in dragon shape, the solid pillars surrounded by sophisticated sinuous dragons.
Especially, in Linh Ung – Bai But pagoda, there’s an Lady Buddha statue which is considered as the tallest one in Vietnam (67m high, 35m lotus diameter, equivalent to a 30-storey building).
